This month\, we welcome Drs. Danielle DeCourcey and Kristie Weir to describe why they chose to use the conversation guide and how they adapted it for use in two different\, and very important\, care settings. \nDr. DeCourcey will share her adaptation process of the Serious Illness Conversation Guide for use with adolescents and young adults\, and a different guide for parents of adolescents and young adults with serious illness. SUMMARY:Part 1: Learn How to Facilitate Well-Being Debriefings within Your Organization
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a stunning toll on the emotional well-being of health care workers. Many of us are looking for proven strategies to mitigate the natural stress\, empathy strain\, and moral distress that we are experiencing. \nIn this two-part webinar series\, Vickie Leff\, LCSW\, will train attendees to be peer facilitators for well-being debriefings\, providing the skills needed to bring this technique to their organizations. Peer-facilitated debriefings are an evidence-based way to provide support to health care workers; they increase social support\, decrease feelings of isolation\, and provide opportunities to learn from each other when coping with difficult issues. The result: positive impact on well-being\, personal resiliency\, improved patient care\, and reduced feelings of burnout. \nIn the first webinar\, attendees will learn: how well-being debriefings help health care workers; how to get buy-in from leadership; the debriefing format and role of the facilitator; how to validate the normal\, expectable stress that accompanies our work; and how to navigate challenging group situations. \nThis webinar will be followed by part two\, in which attendees will practice the techniques discussed in part one\, and have opportunities to practice and reflect. \nClick here to register.

DESCRIPTION:The UBC Division of Palliative Care invites you to attend this series of 40-minute virtual presentations aim to share key messages learned from new Palliative Care initiatives in a variety of settings. These include urban emergency rooms\, a rural hospice\, a palliative outpatient clinic\, vulnerable urban populations (including those with substance use disorders\, unstable homing situations\, and alternate gender identities)\, remote indigenous communities\, and a “virtual PCU” in a community hospital. We will also have sessions on regional palliative care patient identification; starting a Nurse Practitioner service; and implementation of a COVID-19-adapted Serious Illness Conversation Guide. \nEach presentation will last 20-25 minutes\, followed by 15-20 minutes of open discussion. SUMMARY:#GriefLiteracy: Join the movement!
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Palliative Care and Nursing Ethics Hub of the Centre for Research on Health and Nursing in partnership with the Canadian Nurses Association. \nGrief literacy aims to improve how everyday citizens can understand grief and support one another in it. This concept is embedded in a public health commitment to understanding and addressing the loneliness and isolation caused by grief. The goal of grief literacy is to empower individuals\, networks and communities to support the bereaved among us with everyday acts of kindness and compassion. For greater grief literacy\, change needs to occur at all levels. While certainly some bereaved people need professional support\, for many a salient social response is community-based acknowledgment and validation. \nThis event will be led by two originators of the Grief Literacy concept. Professor Mary Ellen Macdonald will provide an overview of Grief Literacy\, its recent development by an international team of grief scholars\, and its relationship to public health palliative care. Professor Susan Cadell will operationalize the concept of Grief Literacy by providing vignettes that can be used for education and practice. In this talk\, the concept of Grief Literacy will also be connected to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic.
