DESCRIPTION:Master Clinician Series \nFor family caregivers\, navigating the complexity of caring for a loved one with dementia can be overwhelming during the best of times. A pandemic with quarantine for some\, and little to no visitation for all\, may push both the person living with dementia and their family caregivers over the edge\, overwhelming the capacity of their resources. Media and information overload\, fear\, frustration\, and anger can make day-to-day decisions difficult. Learning to adapt dementia care during these stressful times is a challenge\, and requires some imagination and changes in the way we provide care. DESCRIPTION:Organized by Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO) and Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) \nSession One: Introduction to Healthcare Consent\, Advance Care Planning and Goals of Care Conversation \nThis session will describe an approach to Advance Care Planning and Goals of Care Conversations. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. Participants will gain awareness of Person-Centered Decision-Making (PCDM) components\, be able to describe how values shape decision-making\, and review resources available on having person centered conversations in the context of COVID-19. \nSession Two: Embrace the Cage – Connecting and having meaningful interactions with patients while wearing Personal Protective Equipment \nIn this webinar we will address how the experience of wearing PPE has impacted care delivery and communication\, as well as how embracing the “cage” of PPE can improve the overall experience for both patient and professional. \nSession Three: Engaging community on conversations around dying and death \nOur discussion hopes to address unique ways to engage with community members in conversations around dying and death in both informal and formalized methods. The hope is to inspire discussions around innovative ways to meet people where they are. \nSession Four: Exploring language and communication techniques for having difficult or stressful conversations with patients and families; common language mishaps that make patients feel uncomfortable \nAn interactive session on difficult conversations around end of life discussion\, particularly in the COVID Pandemic. DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Palliative Care and Nursing Ethics Hub of the Centre for Research on Health and Nursing in partnership with the Canadian Nurses Association. \nGrief literacy aims to improve how everyday citizens can understand grief and support one another in it. This concept is embedded in a public health commitment to understanding and addressing the loneliness and isolation caused by grief. The goal of grief literacy is to empower individuals\, networks and communities to support the bereaved among us with everyday acts of kindness and compassion. For greater grief literacy\, change needs to occur at all levels. While certainly some bereaved people need professional support\, for many a salient social response is community-based acknowledgment and validation. \nThis event will be led by two originators of the Grief Literacy concept. Professor Mary Ellen Macdonald will provide an overview of Grief Literacy\, its recent development by an international team of grief scholars\, and its relationship to public health palliative care. Professor Susan Cadell will operationalize the concept of Grief Literacy by providing vignettes that can be used for education and practice. In this talk\, the concept of Grief Literacy will also be connected to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic.
